Restaurant Reviews

These pages include our own reviews of eateries. Mostly in the United Kingdom.

South London

Tas Turkish Restaurant
33 The Cut
Southwark
London

Modestly priced and with good service and decor, the Tas is definitely worth a visit.

We we tipped off by a friend who has explored many of London's eateries and were rewarded with a fast, efficient and delicious three course pre-concert meal.

There are a series of set menus for between £7.95 to about £18.00; and the mains are modestly priced by London standards. Definitely to be recommended for a casual meal out with friends.

South-West London

Thai Cafe and Restuarant
22 Charlwood Street
Pimlico
London
SW1V 2DY Tel. 0207 592 9584

We are very partial to a good Thai feed, and this cafe-restaurant is a good one for fresh and spicy Thai food.

Although it was a post-pub meal, and possibly somewhat influenced by our jolly state, we thoroughly enjoyed our favourite green curry and fishcakes.

Another good one for a casual meal, but not all dishes are for the faint-hearted

Hampshire

Gurkha Chautari
18 Station Road
Liphook
Hampshire
GU30 7DR
Tel. 01428 729355
01428 729318

The sheer novelty of a Nepalese restaurant in a small county village makes this one a place to visit.

This sort of Nepalese cooking has quite a bit in common with Indian food, so expect some spicy dishes.

However for the price and good service, we recommend it for an excursion from London. Make your visit coincide with the Liphook Carnival and parade and see a spectacle worthy of a much larger town.

Yorkshire

Ristorante bari,
a Jewel of Italy
The Shambles
York
Yorkshire
YO1 7LZ
Tel. 01904 633807

If you're keen on well cooked Italian food that is not limited to pasta and pizza, then call in here for the food, but watch out for the service.

Although very friendly, the night I went to this restaurant, which was a very busy night, Valentine's night, the waiters were turning people away who didn't want to eat immediately (they did have tables available). Some poor customers who thought they were being well organised and asking for a booking in an hour or so, were turned away in a fairly preremtory fashion. Those who asked for a table immediately were rewarded with one. This would be fine, if the waiters had explained this to the hapless customers, but no, no such courtesy.

However, the food tasted good and things were pleasant on what must have been one of their busiest nights.

Worth looking at the menu and making your own mind up...oh, and probably book in advance if you want a guaranteed table.
