Crusing the Nile in Upper Egypt

It is hard to imagine a more idyllic holiday than cruising the Nile in Upper Egypt on a river boat. This holiday was all we imagined and more.

Not usually tourists who like to go with crowds, we usually travel independently by car or public transport and find our own way about. This time we travelled with a tour company on a riverboat and with a guide.

When you have a qualified and friendly guide, a crowd of ethusiastic and friendly tourists from England, Scotland, the United States, Australia and New Zealand and an excellent crew, the experience can be recommended!

Upper Egypt has a climate that means all year around sun and warmth. April was not too hot and, since around Aswan it only rains once every 3 to 5 years, you can be guaranteed good weather.

The MS Regency of the Helios fleet, is a five star riverboat, built in Cairo, with three large CAT diesel engines powering it and a draft of about 1.5m. She has about 100 cabins, a restaurant, lounge, and two sun decks, one with a plunge pool.

The Regency and her crew are to be recommended to anyone with a taste for comfort and good service.

We sailed from Luxor to Aswan and back again over eight days with the Jules Verne touring company and our guide, Ahmed.

The itinerary was arranged so that interesting and informative tours of ancient ruins were alternated with free time for sightseeing, shopping or just plain lying about.

Try it you'll love it!
